In 1984, Dr. Euan Menzies arrived in Provo for a locum at PHMC, a clinic that brought in a rotation of doctors from around the world. During this time, if you needed to see a doctor, you either waited until Thursday to see the government Doctor or you could go to PHMC and see a doctor there in the mornings. Doctors changed frequently, so follow-up was a challenge.
Dr. Menzies fell in love with the Turks and Caicos Islands, so much so that in 1985, he returned and established his practice in a small office in Suzy Turn Plaza. Dr. Menzies recognized the need for continuity in medical care. He started with one room, which quickly grew to two, and eventually his practice needed a Centre to treat more people. He gathered professionals around him who could address the country’s needs, and he opened his door to anyone in need, often for no charge. He became a friend as well as a doctor.
When the Turks and Caicos AIDS Awareness Foundation (TCAAF) was founded, Dr. Menzies was ready to assist in any way he could. He shared insights about the community’s needs, how to serve them best, and how to support them. He not only contributed his vast knowledge and expertise but also discreetly provided some essential supplies for our office.
He opened his clinic to us to treat our clients living with HIV/AIDS and ensure they received essential care. He has always been careful to work in harmony with local government officials. He became a board member of the TCAAF, now known as the TC Health and Wellness Foundation. With his gentle approach, he bridged the gap between government and private care.
Many families who hear of his passing will recall how this remarkable man kept their families happy and healthy. Our condolences go out to Dr. Menzies’ family and friends. We are forever grateful for his kindness, service, and everything he has done for the Turks and Caicos Islands.
May he rest in peace. Always loved, always cherished, always with us.
